Things to do
Colville Farm Holidays provides you with the opportunity to "get away from it all" and relax. If you wish to participate in activities on the farm, we have a range for you to choose from, including:
- Horse trekking. Fully guided and gear provided. Treks are from 1 hour to 5 hours and cater to all levels of experience. Walk, trot or canter along the grassy flats and up the hills. View the streams meandering through the valley with Mount Moehau in the distance. Ride amongst the grazing sheep and cattle. Ride through small areas of bush with many native and introduced birds. For more experienced riders, there are longer treks to a beach on the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. On the way you will get spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf islands. Your guides on all treks will provide commentary on the local history, geography, flora and fauna.
Cost of horse treks are as follow:
1 hour $40, 1.5 hours $50, 2 hours $60, 3 hours $80, 5 hours $150.
- Go tramping. From 1 hour to 6 hours through the bush to waterfalls, or up to the top of the range for views of the Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel Harbour or the Pacific Ocean. Maybe detour to see glow-worms in an old goldmine.
- Great fun - try swimming and jumping from the bank into one of the 2 deep holes in the creek. For non-swimmers, build dams and find signs of life in the shallows. Also semi-precious stones in there too.
- If options 1, 2 or 3 seem too strenuous - relax; be lazy; listen to birdsong; unwind; sleep...
Off-farm activities could include a drive/walk to Colville Village (2/12 min) to the iconic Colville General Store for fuel, LPG, Organic goods, groceries, fishing gear etc, Hereford 'n' a Pickle Farm Shop or Harry's Kitchen for your coffee and food fix. Lady Bug Art Gallery, Himalaya Shop (Indian clothes/jewellery/gifts - opens October - April).
Passing on the way there is the Mahamudra Buddhist Centre, our Medical Centre, Post Office, Social Service Collective (next to the Hall) - with Internet, photocopy, 2nd hand clothes, Library etc; and the tennis Courts.
Then 500m further north you get your first glance of the sea, 2 minutes (1.5 kms) to Colville Bay - 2 1/2 kms away. Best all-tide swimming though is 10 minutes south - at Waitete Bay.
Ten minutes away are fishing possibilities either off the rocks, off your own boat (launched at Amodeo Bay or Otautu Bay) or try one of the charter companies operating nearby.
THEN... further afield are the highly-rated Coromandel Walkway (1hr10), The Driving Creek Railway (25mins) and Hot Water Beach (2hrs)
25 minutes north of Coromandel town and 2 minutes south of Colville village.
